SSL certificates: what you get and how validation works

Every certificate we sell encrypts traffic between a visitor and your site. What differs between them is how much the certificate authority checks before issuing.

Domain validated certificates confirm you control the domain, and nothing else. Validation is automatic and usually completes in minutes.

Organization and extended validation certificates additionally verify the organisation behind the site. This involves real checks against business records and takes days rather than minutes. Have your registration details to hand.

After ordering, the certificate authority needs to validate. For a domain validated certificate that normally means an email to an address at the domain, or a DNS record. Until validation completes, the order sits pending — that is expected, not a fault.

Once issued, the certificate is installed on your hosting service. Certificates expire, and an expired certificate produces a browser warning that will drive visitors away, so renew before the expiry date rather than on it.
