A Year Is Added, Not Lost
Transferring extends the registration by a year on top of whatever time is already on the domain. You do not forfeit what you have paid for.

Contact UsHow long does a domain transfer take?
Most transfers complete within five to seven days. The registry holds the request while the losing registrar has a chance to respond, and that waiting period is set by the registry rather than by us.
You can watch the status on the domain in your account; nothing needs chasing while it is pending.
What is an EPP or auth code?
It is a password for the domain itself, issued by your current registrar, that proves you are entitled to move it. You will usually find it in their control panel under the domain's settings, sometimes labelled "authorization code" or "transfer code".
We never see it until you paste it in, and it is stored encrypted.
Will my website or email go down during the transfer?
No. A transfer changes who the domain is registered through, not where it points. Your nameservers come across unchanged, so the site keeps loading and the mail keeps arriving throughout.
If you also want to move the hosting, that is a separate step you control.
Do I lose the time already paid for on the domain?
No — the opposite. A transfer adds a year to the existing expiry rather than replacing it, so time already paid for is kept and a year is added on top.
Why was my transfer rejected?
Almost always one of four things: the domain is still locked at the current registrar, the EPP code is wrong or expired, the domain was registered or last transferred fewer than 60 days ago, or it is inside the 15-day grace period after a renewal.
The first two you can fix in minutes. The last two are registry rules and only time clears them.
